CROWN REDUCTION

Crown Reduction in North Wales

I'm Craig, a Rhuddlan-based tree surgeon carrying out crown reductions across North Wales. I reduce the height and spread of trees that have outgrown their space while keeping their natural shape. Call 07923 373140 or send an enquiry for a written quote.

ABOUT THIS SERVICE

Crown Reduction, Done Properly

A crown reduction shortens the outer branches of a tree evenly, cutting back to healthy side branches so the tree keeps its natural outline, only smaller. It's the right answer when you want to keep a tree but it's casting too much shade, getting too close to the house, or catching too much wind on an exposed coastal plot.

Along the North Wales coast, from Prestatyn to Llandudno, strong westerly winds put heavy crowns under real strain. A careful reduction cuts the sail effect and the load on large limbs without the harm caused by topping. Inland, in places like Denbigh and Buckley, I often reduce mature sycamores, oaks and beech that were planted when gardens were bigger.

Most reductions are carried out by climbing, using ropes and a harness. I agree the amount of reduction with you on site, typically twenty to thirty percent, and explain what the tree will look like afterwards so you know exactly what to expect.

QUESTIONS

Crown Reduction Questions

Topping cuts a tree off at an arbitrary height, leaving large wounds and weak regrowth that often becomes dangerous. Crown reduction cuts each branch back to a suitable side branch, keeping the tree's shape and health. I only carry out proper reductions.

It depends on the size and species of the tree, how much reduction is needed, and access for climbing and clearing. Large mature trees near buildings take the longest. I give a fixed written price after looking at the tree with you.

Usually twenty to thirty percent of the crown is the safe limit in one visit. Removing more stresses the tree and can trigger decay. Where a tree needs more work, I may suggest a phased reduction over a few years.

Yes. Reducing the spread lets more light reach the lawn and windows. If light is the main concern, a crown thin can sometimes be combined with a lighter reduction for a more natural result.

Often, yes, but you need council consent first if the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or is in a conservation area. I check this before quoting and can help with the application.
